Ford Refuse Truck

Post by Sebastian10 »

Not sure what the origin of this is - possibly put together by someone or poor condition original - wheels appear to be painted grey

Container is lighter in colour and matt in appearance

I agree and a clue is the windscreen moulding, clearly has suffered from some heat.

did you look at the wheels from underside...are they black still?

if not then the truck was flipped over at one point for the sun fade to affect them

I do not think that the sun can turn black wheels to grey. It is more likely that they were overpainted by somebody, as the original poster indicated anyway.

According to the Nick Jones matchbox web site the sun fades the container to brown - I have another refuse model where this seems to have happened

Also the container in the picture is the same light grey matt finish all over including most of the inside (90% plus)

Not sure if this makes any difference but the insert in the slot of the chassis is in white/grey plastic instead of the blue/green translucent colour as found in the other 2 refuse trucks I have

I am almost certain that the wheels have been painted grey as black is showing through albeit faintly in places

I have included a view from underneath

Could this possibly be the result of somebody putting the model in a jar of paint thinner or turpentine in order to remove an old repaint. I tried to do this a couple of times in my youth with odd and disastrous effect.
The crazing on the box and the hazing on the windows makes me think this. The paint thinner can make wheels turn grey.

That sounds like a worthwhile experiment.

I saw this Truck on ebay a few months ago and It seemed weird to have GPW, so I took a closer look and it looks like the wheels were black at one point, so I thought I was painted or something.
