Interesting that the 9a already has the escape wheels,. This would seem to confirm previous suggestions that the escape wheel shaft ends should be painted.

I think, that there are three shades/colours:
a) dark maroon
b) light maroon
c) dark red

I think, as it was mentioned yet, that there are 3 types of the trim.

a) HA gold trim
b) HA silver trim
c) MS silver trim

the fourth variation (no trim) I think, is a negative variation only

On the contrary my friends..... Both Mike Stannard and Nick list all but the very last variation of this 20A as all having hand applied trim on them. It doesn't matter whether painted in maroon or red, this model is more likely to have hand painted trim than not, so I like it as it is shown to us. Many early trim painted Lesneys in the 1958-59 period (when metal wheels were ending and the Gray plastic wheels were first being introduced), are commonly found with this gold/silvery trim mixed as on this model with it's normally painted tanks. Please check all of your 5Bs, 9Bs and 19Bs as other prime examples of varying gold/silvery trims right out of the Lesney factories. These Gray plastic wheeled 20As are so hard to find in any condition that I have only ever owned 2 (One repainted), and only one of them from an OLD collection was as minty as this example shown. I believe this model OZBOXROX has shown us to be quite original as-is, and quite a mint rarity at that.....kwakers

Your post is one of the best so far on the 20a gpw variation and I'm pretty well convinced the 20a I have is genuine. It is light maroon, gpw, second type trim (silvery gold). I did check my other 5b, 9b & 19b gpw versions and they are all dark gold trim excluding the 19b with silver trim. As I am now finding more time for my collection (semi-retired) I am starting to catalog the variations I have. I'm sure I did come across at least 1 other model with the same type trim (silvery gold). The next time I come across it I will post it. Interestingly the 5b and 9b gpw versions had dashes of red fleck through the gold trim, similar to the silvery gold 20a gpw. I have a photo with blue background which seems to bring out the true body colors of the 20a.

WOW Dave! I had never seen THOSE photos at all! With the distinctive solvent applied 14A crosses looking quite original and factory flawed as expected, I am now convinced all of this Seller's models were actually as advertised by him, unfinished factory Mokos. (Hoarded by some factory worker's wife at home 60 years ago.... )

Everything looks Great on those new color comparison photos ozboxrox, two very rare mint GPW variations that anyone would be proud to own along with your mint MW version also. I think that the change of the siver/gold trim, by some early models, is caused by a chemical reaction, perhaps oxidation. Some silver trim, perhaps, were not stable enough to "survive". The colour has changed by some silver trim under chemical/physical influence, maybe only the very thin outer layer of the paint, which has the most influece on the colour which our eye, with its light receptors, subjectively perceives. The colour of an object is the ratio between absorbed and reflected white light (spectrum of the wavelength). We are now in the "Nanoworld" which has the most influence on the colour/shades. Please imagine e.g.the oil spill on the puddle and its changing colours. We do not see a dirty water, but the shining colours. It is a physical interference phenomenon associated with the changing of the thickness of the oil layer.The colour of the object is physical/subjective/biological phenomenon and I do not want to bother you with it at the end of the year
