Nail Axles?

I'd like to open the discussion about a possibility of the existence of the third type of the axle. Officially there are known two types of axles: Flat Head and Dome Head. It is known that at the beginning of the production, there were used the nails for the axles, but so far it has not been anywhere distinguished. I think, we can distinguish a third kind of the axle: NAIL HEAD


a) Nail Head
b) Flat Head
c) Dome Head

The Nail Head axles are only by the very early models.

The "nail head" being not only roughly halfway between the flat head and dome head but also double-sided?

Exactly Hugh, I would define it in the same way, double-sided convex surface on the halfway between the flat head and dome head.

I had seen these axle ends Antonin, but their semi-domed heads seemed to add to my early confusion in cataloguing some of our early Moko variations with Mike Stannard's Guide. The concave inner face makes identifying these earliest "Nailhead Axles" much easier for me now, so I Thank both you for this Post and Idris for discussing these two early axles' details as they were used on our early Moko Lesney Toys. In the early days of collecting my Matchbox models, I was just as confused as Dick. These Nail Head axles constantly confused me when I was determining the variations of the models. Many times I thought I have the early model with Dome Head axles. But It seemed illogical to me, that nearly all the early models have the "dome head axles". It must be something between FH and DH axles I thought. I have read somewhere an artickle about Lesney and there it was written about nails for the production of the axles. This was a logical explanation of the baffling puzzle with the axles for me.
