Dan,
Thanks for sharing those great pictures and giving us some of the history! 1965 -- what a time and it looks like a fun family Christmas.
You have an amazing memory that you can recall those times and some of the specific models, etc. I may have to dig out some of the old vintage family movies and see if I can spot any Matchbox items!

Kurt: It looks like a treasure trove for you with all the Matchbox models/boxes -- that must have been a treat! Too bad the boxes didn't survive, but very few kids kept them in those days. Glad to hear that some of the models made it -- I'm sure that they are full of memories............... Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing Dan and Kurt, those are great photos.
I believe I have some from around the same time period, I just don't have them with me.
Sure brings back thoughts and memories of happy times.
I had those same carry cases as a kid; I believe they were made by" Ideal"

Kurt here are your photos re-sized as requested.

Thank you Bill, mm, and zbret for your comments and thank you zbret for resizing the images.

I have found a replacement of the lost Ideal case. When I opened the cases on Christmas morning, the plastics were still intensely out gassing. The closest thing now days is opening a cheap vinyl shower curtain and then breathing deeply! Ahhhh, the smell of memories.

My god mother did spoil me. The next year she gave me a G3d Farm gift set which I still have (models and liner complete, box gone).
Happy hunting!

thanks Bret but i think the case was made by mattel...ideal did make a case...i think it was blue with a dump truck on it...ive tried to get one of those but either they were asking too much for just the case or the models contained drove the price up...i have a couple of them...i speak for everyone and say...we would love to see those pics someday!

Kurt..thanks for posting some pics...you looked overjoyed by getting them...i like how the boxes were in the space in the case! also i too had the smell of the case on christmas morning burned deep in my memory...and like you...every time i open a new shower curtain...instant memory back to that christmas!
Please use a web hosting site (like photobucket) to store pictures so you can post them here, using attachments makes it hard to view the pictures when you have to scroll to see them. Seeing comparisons of models is hard to see with attachments too.

...and thanks to you too Kurt for sharing such personal pictures.

Sadly there is nothing like this from my early Years, absolutely nothing, it just never occured to my parents to take pictures and I don't remember having models for Christmas presents anyway, virtually all of mine were brought for me between holiday periods during the Year, so that's probably why I don't have pictures.

Indeed, you are correct Dan, the cases were made by Mattel circa 1966

I do have one old photo album with me here and had a look through it. While I did find some Christmas photos, none of them had any Matchbox cars in them. We never would get Matchbox cars at Christmas time though, Instead, my two brothers and I would get one each, whenever our Dad came home from a business trip. It was always an exciting time, to see which one we would get!

However I did happen to come across one photo, in in the old album, that does have a diecast car in it. Oddly I have no memories of this car at all! I say "oddly" because I have a pretty good recollection of all the toys we had as kids and I do remember all of the Matchbox cars that we had. However the one in this photo is a mystery to me as I have no recollection of it, or of playing with it.

Thats me in the back with the car behind me. My older brother in front and my younger brother to the right- in the photo.
I'm not sure what the year this photo was taken I'm thinking around 1965-1966 I would have been 5 or 6. The game on the floor that we are playing is called "Hands Down" which apparent came out in 1964. Here's a link about it http://neighborhoodvalues.com/nv/Toys-G ... /408tg.htm

After a bit of online searching I think I was able to identify the car. Rather than say though, I'll see if anyone, wants to venture a guess??
