That is a nice find Chris and possibly one of the most wanted pieces of 'Ephemera' for any Dinky Toy collector. I have my Eye on a similar box, the #551 French Dinky Toys Silver Wraith from 1959, owned by a forum member and I know he is very unlikely to be selling it any Day soon!!

Your new finds continue to amaze! The Bisto livery would probably also be my favourite, and the 2nd casting is the prettiest of these vans - what a shame they suffer so badly from fatigue. I've only just seen that lovely trade box too. That price of 1/5 is interesting. Perhaps it could be the price per van. I remembered reading in the Mike & Sue Richardson book about prices going up in the war, and I've just had a quick look to refresh my memory. Purchase tax was imposed on toys during 1940, which increased prices by about 20%, and from 1941 prices were subject to change without notice. As an example, the price of the Mechanised Army Set was shown as 12/6 when announced in 1939, rising to 18/6 in 1940 and 25/- in 1941!

Purchase tax percentages wandered about all over the place at this time, giving rise to a lot of price variance depending when you bought your models!

No wonder they didn't sell many when the price went from 6d to 1/5!
I wonder what a shopkeeper from 1940 would make of somebody paying £12,650.00 for one of these? (Bentalls in 1994).
