Morestone Austin Countryman

Post by Ecclesley »

Found a Morestone Esso petrol pump series Austin Westminster Countryman this afternoon in the recycling shop.
I kind of like this model, it is of very good quality. Now up for restoration/repaint.

I quite like these, they go very well with some of the early Matchbox. The blue one is lovely and a bit harder to find and I don't think I've ever seen the mauve one.

I find many of the Morestones a bit crude, but this is one which would not have looked out of place as an a-series 1-75. (There have been suggestions in the past that some of the better small-scale non-Lesney models might have been the result of Jack Odell helping out other East london toy companies. Could this bodyshell be an example of this?)

Have to say I agree with that, both the Morestone and Budgie ranges are full of models that are fantastic ideas but lack something 'in the metal'. It's a nice idea that Jack Odell gave some of the other companies a hand, looking at this one and comparing the headlamps to those of a 36a Austin he maybe helped out but not enough to threaten Lesney's position as the best.

I am afraid it is already too late Stephan, Jack the Paint Stripper has done his work in the mean time.
I intend to make it look like this:
