OK Nick, I don't have any 'Stannard' listings and have never seen any, I only know of them through this forum. I don't use any 'Codes' from any printed or on-line "Matchbox" sites as 'Set in stone', and I only adopted the box coding system from early 'MICA' club magazines, so at least whoever I was talking to knew what I was on about, and 'Vice-Versa'.

I am pretty sure that the two box descriptions shown here should be swapped, it is common knowledge that the 'Short script' (A LESNEY PRODUCT), came out first and the 'Longer script (Matchbox regd etc, etc,), came out later and carried on into the 'G' Boxes.

So I believe Stannard made a genuine mistake and did not notice it.

I have not heard from Pat for some time now, I believe he works away from home.

So now we know the following F type boxes exist

F1 'series' printed in blue # box, ALP (a lesney product)
F2 'series' printed in blue # box, LPC (lesney products co ltd london england)
F3 'series' printed in blue # box, MITR (matchbox is the reg'd tm of lesney products co ltd london england)
F4 'series' printed in blue # box, MRT (matchbox reg'd tm lesney products london england)
F5 'series' printed under matchbox, ALP (a lesney product )
F6 'series' printed under matchbox, LPC (lesney products co ltd london england)
F7 'series' printed under matchbox, MITR (matchbox is the reg'd tm of lesney products co ltd london england)
F8 'series' printed under matchbox, MRT (matchbox reg'd tm lesney products london england)

I only have examples of the F1 and F8, all were printed by Bowater Scott and have the bow & arrow trademark, Were any of them made by Pembroke Abbey which should have the Abbey (or castle) trademark please???

The third (bottom) box in my three box image shown here, is as far as I am concerned a rare 'F' Box. Sadly I do not own it, it was with other models for sale on 'fleabay' some time ago, but the other images of the models with it (at least an example of a #44b, Phantom V), with it, looked fine and being offered for a reasonable price.

I have studied the pictures of this box and can not see any signs of hand pasting a cut-out image from the catalogue and stuck on to the side of the box and why would you do it anyway!

As far as I can tell, the rest of the design and type script, matches the 'F2' shown just above it, so if this box proves genuine, it will have to go after the 'F2' as a new 'F3', Sorry Nick for all these box notes, but it is interesting stuff and important we record it all for posterity and for the forum's members.

I'll go out an a rather large limb and say that the box pictured with the catalog illustration is bogus. The box may be real but someone put that on the side panel. After spending the last three years collecting transitional f-boxes, I've never seen a box that has that type of illustration on the side within the f-series. The LPC box for the 69 is somewhat difficult.

I have to agree. That catalogue picture must have been put on there by somebody privately.

The first statement is correct, however with regard to Stannard the matter is a little more complicated.

In Stannard's book, the designation "F1" is assigned to boxes with white "SERIES" under the number inside the blue square. For this type, the kind of bottom lettering is not taken into account at all.

The designations "F2" through "F5" are assigned to boxes with red "SERIES" under "OX" combined with the four different kinds of bottom lettering (ALP, LPC, MIR and MRT - my own abbreviations - in this order).

So, first there is an inconsistency in ignoring the kinds of bottom lettering for the "F1" type, and second the third kind of "SERIES" positioning (being in red under the blue square) is omitted altogether.

In my own box listing, I have never assigned sequence numbers to any subtypes of F type boxes, but have instead only used abbreviations for the individual features: bottom lettering kinds as mentioned above, and the three kinds of "SERIES" positioning are abbreviated as WIB (white in box), RUB (red under box) and RLB (red left of box), respectively.

I cannot say right away which of the possible combinations of bottom lettering and "SERIES" positioning exist and which do not, but I do not see much benefit in trying to establish this knowledge, as for each individual model only very few of those combinations were used. In addition, there is also the further variable of "additional text" (none, "Autosteer", red "Superfast" or black "Superfast") to be taken into account as well, and one more variable specifying whether the model shown on the box has regular or Superfast wheels.

To sum up, you can work out sequence numbers for a total of 96 possible combinations of four variables - 4 x 3 x 4 x 2 - (of which only a few really exist), or do without such numbers altogether. I have chosen the latter.
