36a Austin A50

Post by Idris »

Both the NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) and the AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) list a plausible "stockroom clearance" crossover model: GPW without the roof brace (NAMC's variation 36-1F, AIM's variation 36-1e). If confirmed, this could be added to the end of Nick's variation table.
Stannard has no variations not already listed by Nick, and neither has Houghton.
U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.

I note that John Houghton does not make any reference to the red trim on the 36a and both Stannard and Nick show hand and mask.

In the recent 7a trim thread there is reference to the possibility of mixed trim on models other than the 7a.

Here are some images that show some interesting detail when viewed up close on the 36a.

On the model ( labelled 2) of gpw dc and mask spray silver either side of the bumper it is easy to see the fine mask RED spray to tail lights.
What I find most interesting is the right hand side light has a nice crisp edge and the paint is thicker but it is still mask sprayed.

On model number 1, still with gpw dc and same mask silver trim either side of bumper but the red trim is very crisp and thicker.
Sadly the left hand light suffered a car park bingle but does still show crisp edges on what remains of the lhs light.
Under high magnification there is no sign of overspray or feathering with the red on this silver mask spray model 1.

So I guess the questions are.
Were all GPW with red trim mask sprayed?
Could the red paint have come out in droplets as apposed to fine thin spray?
Were some GPW models red trim done by hand until they perfected the red mask spray technique?

The 36a was discontinued very early in 1961.

Perhaps if other members can view their A50 fleet and check the red trim on the gpw versions to see if they have similar examples.

While the catalogues do mention silver trim to grill, lights and bumpers it should also be noted that some A50’s had the emblem/ornament on the bonnet silver trimmed as well. I have two models with this additional trim and in the photo on Nicks site of Antonin fleet there looks to be some as well.
Note the extra long red trim lower down on the rear , often this is high on the fin.(refer photos 6 and 7)

Very interesting and food for thought, Bert! (I love the observation about the bonnet badge!)

Very nice and professional contribution Bert, thanks for it. I think, there is a lot of stuff by trims to be discuss here. It is the most overlooked variation.
