Matchbox Display
Matchbox Display
Hi All,
Just got back on the new board and wanted to share with you my summer project.
It is filled to match the 1969 dealer catalog photo, with one or two exceptions, I'm sure. It is missing two Kings and six Yesteryear, but they will come along soon enough.

Very n ice indeed ! What is the history of this display case?
Re: Matchbox Display
Lovely, lovely, lovely
Re: Matchbox Display
My understanding is that this was bought by a local toy shop from the Chicago Toy Show in the late 60's. it was then purchased by the 2nd owner in the mid 80's, as the toy store was faltering. I then acquired it earlier this year from the 2nd owner. It was empty, of course, and I was able to fill it with models from my own collection.

Hi JJ.
Superb cabinet, outstanding, I think this is the same one that Naji was after. There can't be many in the Chicago area!.

That is the ultimate store display. I have a 1966 cardboard display, but it is nothing next to this one. GREAT score. If it is the one that was on E-Bay this year, I talked myself out of getting it. Congratulations on a beautiful display,

Thanks everyone. The answer is yes to Nick and yes to Tony. Odd thing was I didn't know it was on ebay. I found out about it through our local club and had arranged a viewing when it came up on the board. I went to see it and bought it that day. It is in very good condition and has a great local history. I will say that the twenty or so mile trip home was a bit rough on it. It seems the vacuum formed plastic on the turntables is extremely brittle and there were some small pieces which fell away, but no major damage. The light does not work and I suspect the ballast is bad. Due to the construction of the case, it was impossible to remove the light cover, so I added some LED strip lighting and that is working very well. All I need now is an LC-4 to go with it. I actually saw one for sale this spring at the Kane County show, but it was way out of my price range. I am sure another will come up one of these years.

Re: Matchbox Display
This is a superb display. I have a lot of pre 1970 displays but not this one. A great item to have.
These were the photos I saved from the ebay posting at the time.
and the 1969 trade catalogue page:
