No. 37 Coca Cola Trucks

Post by Idris »

Following the first of the no, 37 summaries in the Missing, Previously-Catalogued RW 1-75 variations area, several well-respected RW collectors have commented on Nick's decision to have only two Coca Cola trucks in his catalogue listing, the even- and uneven-load, no baseplate casting being combined into a single model. This is at odds with several other catalogues, and I think that Nick's decision was probably based on the fact that the basic casting remained the same, i.e. the change to the load should be regarded as a casting variation rather than as a completely new casting (as with the 17a and 17b Removals Van). At the moment, I can't think of a precedent for a major casting variation resulting in a model being split over two codes, meaning Nick is technically correct in what he has done.
Anyhow, what I want to do with this thread is to hold a quick poll amongst collectors about whether there are two different Coca Cola trucks, or three.
Although I agree with the argument that the changes to the load are simply a macro casting variation, if I were to be collecting or displaying only one of each model, I would definitely want to have both the even- and the uneven-load models on display. On that basis, even though I understand, sympathise and partly agree with Nick's decision, I would vote for there being three different trucks.

I tend to think of the even and uneven castings as distinctly different.
I'm wondering if this same discussion/vote should not take place with regard to the 34C VW campers where I also think of the high and low topped campers as distinctly different models.

Good point, and one which I would have stumbled across when I reached no. 34. Shall we see how this vote goes and then do the same for no. 34 in a few weeks time?

I have always regarded the coke truck has two models, with and without a baseplate, the first even and uneven loads i treat has i would different colours, they are different but the same model, the camper i regard as the same model too high and low roof has i would different colours.

Early in my collecting, I coded these a-b-c. But due to almost all publications and lists only having two, I changed for the sake of convenience. Same with the camper. I also agree with Dave that these are casting variations, rather than completely new castings. The #37 without baseplate is the same casting, only with an alteration to the crates at the rear - the #37 with baseplate is a completely new mould with similar design. Same goes for the camper - the casting has simply been modified, rather than a completely new one being designed.

Votes 2 to 5 now.. :ugeek:

Rather than complete reworks, I've always regarded the Coke Trucks & the Campers as variations:

Two Coca Cola trucks: 3
Three Coca Cola trucks: 5
