Huge Charbens "Old Crocks" Collection

Post by CharbensYY »

Hi all,

Thank you for adding me to the forum. :D

I thought I'd share my late Uncles rather vast collection of Charbens, apparently there are some here that were never even supposed to have been made.

Unfortunately I know next to nothing about these, and I've got the task of selling them! Any help, tips, identification of rare ones etc is very much appreciated.

I'm sorry there hasn't been more response to your posting of what is an absolutely stunning collection.
Unfortunately I don't collect these and, to be perfectly frank, I don't think they have much of a following. (They are a bit crude, especially compared to Lesney's Yesteryears.) I think our glorious leader, Nick Jones, may have had some (which he sold a while back when downsizing), so hopefully he will be able to shed more light on what you have there and whether there are any gems amongst them.
My gut feeling is that perhaps you would to best to try to sell them as a group, rather than individually since thelatter course runs the risk of the collection being "cherry picked" for rarities, leaving you with a substantial number of hard-to-sell common models.
In the meantime, you could try studying Nick's catalogue pages for the series.

Hello CharbensYY, I saw these over on 'Moyboyz' and have made a comment about the models going into the wrong boxes. You say they were out of their boxes before your involment with them, so that's OK, it was not your fault.

To get them back in their correct boxes is going to be a bit hit and miss, because to the average collector (not saying you are average... :D ), they do seem to be the same models. My advice here is to put the cleanest and better condition models in what appear to be the cleanest and better condition boxes, the Army models have their own distinctive box, so that should not cause you any problems. I mention over on 'Moyboyz' that the last issue models will have been in the 'Clear-View' boxes, I do not collect this range in general, only have the Rolls-Royce and Vauxhall models.

The Rolls-Royce in my 'Clear-View' box has a stepped steering wheel and the road wheels painted on both sides, where as issues before this had a smooth steering wheel and only the outside of the road wheels painted!!

Thanks both, and nice to see some familiar faces on this forum.

It is indeed an amazing collection, 250 pieces in total just in Charbens! As said here, and elsewhere, there just isn't the following for them though. :(

If I was to "job lot" the whole set, would you say eBay / Vectis or elsewhere would be best?

Before they go, Nick - would you like some photos of the missing ones from your website? I've several Stephensons Rocket Tenders (No15), 2 Articulated Lorries (No27), Searchlight with mirror (No30) and 9 'barrel lorries' which I can find no information on anywhere!

Another photo to share (and sorry for those who have seen this before on MOYBOYZ!) is the 'aerial shot' of the lot laid out in order...

Apologies for the double post.

Interestingly the KRB site has the 'barrel lorries' as 1900 Straker Steam Lorry No13 (https://web.archive.org/web/20050315153 ... raker.html). Reading Nicks site in more detail, it does say there were two versions. Guess my 'barrel lorries'' are not quite as unknown as I thought! :D

Hi mate,
Sorry just seen this, lovely collection! Some there I've never seen. Not much fatigue either. I've got 10 or so boxed old crocks, I had them on the Toyfair stall for ages, but no interest so I'm keeping them. Personally I love them, the crudity is part of their appeal for me, good luck with selling them!
