1-75 Displays Found
Re: 1-75 Displays Found
Thanks for all the kind words - finds like this just don't normally happen to me. I still can't believe it myself. I wonder if the jeweler saw how wide my eyes must have gotten when he turned the corner with the box. I will post a picture of the assembled displays as soon as I am done restoring them to their natural white color. Over the years white plastic tends to yellow. I will post some before and after pictures so you can see the results.

Here are some pictures showing the before and after of the restoration of the inner white sleeves. A simple process but you must be careful not to damage the plastic in the process. I started out with a small test area to make sure I would not harm the plastic. The restored panel is from the second unit which has some minor damage to the inner sleeves and top. I wanted to see how one would turn out before I restored the NM/M stand. If you have questions feel free to ask.

Excellent find. What is the process used to restore the plastic?

Here are some shots of the display fully assembled. Couldn't be happier with the results. On a scale of 1-10, I am going to give this a 9.9 This display could have just come off the warehouse floor.

Re: 1-75 Displays Found
I have had a lot of interest in what I used to restore the plastic. Here is a picture of the product I used - you can buy it at any beauty supply store. You can use the 3% hydrogen peroxide that you can buy in the store but it just takes a lot longer for it to work and the result is not always as good.
Make sure to use gloves and eye protection when using this product. It can easily burn your skin.
I poured a little into a bowl and used a soft paint brush to coat the sleeve, didn't worry about being neat, I just made sure all the surfaces got covered well. Once the product is on the plastic cover it with clear plastic so that it will not dry out. I used Saran Wrap (also known as plastic wrap or cling wrap). Once I had it covered I let it sit outside in the sun for about 2-3 hours. The UV light from the sun is needed to make this work. You should see a difference in the color by now, if not just let it in the sun longer to do its work. Once it is white remove the Saran wrap and rinse the plastic off. I then tool it inside and washed it in the bath tub with some soap and water to remove the last of the peroxide. I then wiped it down carefully and let it air dry over night.
Couldn't be happier with the results! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

John, a lot of us would be interested to know what your technique is for returning the yellowing plastic to white. Are you performing miracles??

That is it Alex, the very stuff John has shown above. The '40' is the strongest you can buy from domestic outlets such as a Beauty Salon and it is thick enough to use directly on plastics.motorman wrote:John, a lot of us would be interested to know what your technique is for returning the yellowing plastic to white. Large areas you will want to cover with cling film to stop it evaporating.
The quality of the plastic in the first place will determine how effective this treatment will be, what was it you want to restore.

Now, if anybody has a small or round display they would like to get rid of let me know. Always in the market for one.
