I hadn't considered that Mick, however if the item posted has an element of insurance cover in the postage costs and a claim for loss was made then it is possible the insurer would accept the indicated claim without checking if the item posted was indeed worth that amount.

It is safe to assume Insurers will only conduct checks on an claim if the amount claimed exceeds a certain predetermined threshold.

that's a valid point Mick but wouldn't the package need to be sent recorded to be insured therefore giving a record of delivery
making it very difficult to make a claim although a claim for damaged goods would be possible but unlikely

You have a chance of a claim with RM when using standard post if the value is under £20 and you have a certificate of posting.

Ebay paypal payments require a tracking number which includes insurance - a claim is easy using the ebay tracking number entry as proof of the value of the item posted based on auction price

TBH I was thinking along the lines of a post office claim not ebay
