41a Jaguar D-Type

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) does not contain any models not already listed by Nick, and neither does the AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) nor Stannard.
Houghton indicates that Nick's variation code 8 (GPW) can come with either a matt black baseplate (variation 41a-6) or a gloss black baseplate (variation 41a-7), all other variations having only the matt black baseplate. If confirmed this would become Nick's variation code 9.
U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.

Recently found a slight difference on the base plate, so far I have only found this base on 2 code 1 models.

That's an odd one! Die repair after damage perhaps?

Hi I could be wrong but it looks like the baseplate on the second model looks really rough around the area in question.
Kindest Regards

Yes I think there must have been a repair here early in the production.

Really early, I think. My 41a without decal rings (but with a racing number at the rear) has the repaired base, and so does the one that Dave showed earlier this week. Great find, Jason. Are there any other casting differences that might mark this as a prepro?

Just checked mine (no decals), and it has the early base.

Both the 2 I have with the early base have decals, one with a decal at the back and the other with both decals.

Nice spotted Jason. My model with early matt base platte has both decals. The second model without decal guides and decals has glossy (and later) base plate.
