What can happen if models aren't stored with care Dinky Matc

Post by slicc64 »

Rescued this lot back in 2011 from a greasy diesel mechanics workshop after a tip off.
They were all on display on shelves above head height and had obviously been there for years absorbing corrosive gasses/fumes/dust and residue from workshop activities.

lot's of the boxes suffered equally.

The dinky cleaned up nicely and was ebayed some time ago although i kept the best missile erector

The interesting thing to me was that the Dinky paint work didn't suffer as badly as the matchbox did. it didn't have the same bubbling, blistering, pealing and cracking problems.

many of the matchbox cleaned up OK and look a lot better than they did then. I have chosen the worst pic's from the lot to show.

Oh man, what a shame. it is much worse than play wear just because it is neglect. I'm glad you saved 'em. Jay

Hi Stephan,
I'm assuming your post is in regard to the workers health and safety. If my assumption is correct then
I guess the difference is people have a sense of smell, dust masks/respirators, a pair of legs and one would hope, a good dose of common sense and self preservation.

In 1970 I worked part time at a local gas station/garage. I did all the foreign car repair. The most common work done there was brake work. All, and I mean every single one of the mechanics that worked there long term is now dead from Asbestosis (cancer caused by Asbestos).

Each one of these guys smoked cigarettes and we now know smoking & asbestos exposure is a sure death sentence. I only worked there a short period of time, but it was far from my only exposure to asbestos. I was fortunate not to smoke in those days.

I do go for regular exams as my exposure level was enough that I could have problems later in life. Unfortunately, now is "later in my life" and in the back of my mind, I know it's possible my golden years could end very badly. If asbestos does get me, I hope my wife or kids sue for compensation from one of the asbestos trust funds set up for this deadly material that was so commonly used.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

Ghostie ... It's gonna be OK man. they were just old toys. They may not have been in the best of shape when put on display.
