45a vauxhall Victor

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) has variation 45-1H noted as having either narrow or wide GPW. This variation appears to reflect Nick's codes 19 to 22 which have 9 mm diameter GPW, but NAMC makes no mention of the tread. Could it be that 9 x 20 GPW (Nick's codes 19 and 20) and 9 x 24 GPW (Nick's codes 21 and 22) have different widths, or is this a genuine wheel thickness difference as we have previously seen on other models?
The AIM “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) differentiates between large, knobbly SPW (variation 45-1g) and small, finer SPW (variation 45-1h). Both variants have green windows and r/a. If confirmed, the small SPW would fit into Nick's table between existing codes 22 and 23 (9 x 24 SPW) with probably two trim variations existing (front and rear mask sprayed, front only mask sprayed). AIM also notes that "green windows come in various shades and may appear to be clear".
Neither Houghton nor Stannard list any models not already covered by Nick, and U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.

Back on Lefora, a member showed a 45a with gold trim. A variation code and confirmation of the existence of a second example are required.

I had one model (upper) with front SPW ø9x24 and rear SPW ø9x20. I was looking long time for a model (lower) with SPW ø9x20. This should be the variation with knobly SPW, you have mentioned?

It could well be, although AIM also talks of a diameter difference.

Then it must be only SPW ø9,5x20. It is a question if this wheels are not too large for this model. Or it could be an optical illusion only. When you see my photo, the SPW ø9x20 seems to be larger as SPW ø9x24

I have another interesting model in my collection. It is the variation with SPW ø9x24 and clear windows. Clear windows are quite rare by this model and they are typically by the early variation with GPW ø8x18 and not by the late variations.
