RW #15 Vw 1500 Saloon...again and again!

Post by Sir_Matchbox_96 »

Hi all,
here is a RW #15 Vw 1500 Saloon. Auction base shot wasn't that bad, but now it's arrived...Fail!
Anyway I want to show it here and looking foward to your comments!
I wasn't sure if a label would be generally right on a metallic red RW version or if just decals were applied?!

Thanks,
Linus

The rear rivet to me is showing signs of stress (circled), and the upright edges shows the results of a baseplate being forced away from a body making the outer edge of the rivet appear more upright than usual (arrowed). So even before you told us, I would have suspected some tampering has been done to the model.

Hi Linus.
Could I ask for a base photo of this model next to a normal one so we can compare the rivets, As only one other red regular wheel model is known to exist the chances are that it was made in Lesneys R & D workshop so may not be as perfect as one assembled in the factory.

Hello Nick,
sadly I don't have a normal Rw VW 1500 Saloon...all I can give you are some Sf's.

Greetings,
Linus

Hmmm...
It appears that the baseplate has been ground away around the rivet, if so then the original baseplate was removed with a dremel rather than a drill.

Rivit clearly hasnt been properly spun on this one. To make such a fake with such a long rivit stem as we can see in the photo means that this toy probably left the factory unspun so the base swap was easy however the maker has tried but failed to spin the rivit properly. To make this look like a real colour trial the unspun rivit should have been chiselled and then it would be impossible to say whether it was chiselled in 1970 or 2014!
