Working on the premise that each pixel requires x bytes of storage space, I think the file size should reduce in direct proportion to the total number of pixels.

An image loaded into Windows 7 'Paint' program can be adjusted for file size or pixel size, suggesting a file size can have more or less number of pixels, If you reduce the pixels the file size automatically reduces and the image is smaller.

With JPEG pictures the file size is not directly connected to pixel size - when saving as a .jpg you can choose the picture quality (more or less compressed), and the higher the quality the file size will be larger but pixel size doesn't change. When "saving as" a .jpg (or e.g. in GIMP you have to "export" as .jpg) choose more compression = less quality, which will still be good enough for an avatar picture.

Reg, do you (or other forum members), want a walkthrough on reducing pictures for an Avatar by means of reducing the number of Pixels?

Reg i use windows 8 at work and i absolutely hate it. It was designed to be used on tablets or touch screen computers. Microsoft were convinced laptops were going out of fashion and focused their attention to the tablet market. Windows 7 is by far the best software they have designed imho.
