No it doesn't! Convention is used in English to describe a large, important, infrequent (but often regular) meeting.
A small fraction of the Forum membership meeting up for a couple of hours in a public area at an unused table on the sidelines of somebody else's toy fair cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be termed a convention, be it a mini-, deci-, centi-, milli-, micro-, nano-, pico-, femto-, atto-, or zepto- one. (I might just possibly be prepared to concede the term yocto-convention, but only because we know each other. :D)

Yes, convention isn't quite right. But it could turn into one if all those Marx brothers turn up.

It would be great to hold our own convention, Maybe one day we can make it happen, But I would suggest holding it close to the Sandown event, Sure the NEC is a terrific event but there is nothing else in the area to make you want to visit the area (sorry Birmingham), As far as I know there is only one very expensive hotel there, The Sandown toyfair is a very close second to the NEC, There are cheaper hotels and more of them, And it is on the outskirts of London and close to Londons Heathrow and Gatwick airports which makes it much easier for our overseas members to attend. Plus anyone coming for 9+ days would probably be able to attend maybe 3 or more toyfairs.

Dam, I was hoping Hugh would not check that, my plan has been scuppered, I so much wanted to use the word 'Convention' connected to our little meet-up, its a fabulous word, sounds so grand, ah well, back to the drawing board...

I must agree that the proposed huddle surrounding the color variants of the Studebaker is hardly the makings of a "convention". Sorry Ghosty!
Now, the Gathering that Jim Gallegos has planned for July in Alubquerque..... now THAT is a convention. :D If and when we manage to get something remotely similar to Jim's event, something that keeps us together for at least two or three days, something with some in-room trading, social time for sampling variations of local beverages along with the variations of our Lesney treasures, perhaps a meal, perhaps an auction, certainly a toys show... Now THAT event, that true "convention" would have me joining the Tinman on a plane bound for Heathrow. I don't think the two of us would be alone either.
I also would suggest that if such an event were to be planned, the plans should be made nearly a full year out to allow for the schedules of distant travelers to be cleared to allow for a lengthier stay/visit in the UK. But that's just my humble opinion.

Greg, I fully agree that THAT is a proper Convention for model collectors and enthusiasts, but the whole costing of that type of convention must be quite high, money I suspect we would rather spend on models some of us are still chasing... :D

I could not help but post this below, not to get into an argument with Hugh ("Idris"), but just to pull 'MY' meaning of 'Convention' into line and I must admit what I imagine we would be doing at the NEC (Sandown Park), is close to the 2nd meaning, but even closer to the 3rd meaning on this 'Wiki' based list...

I very much doubt it would be possible or feasible for members of this forum to organise a proper model based convention along the lines of the old 'MICA' events or that event for July, in Alubquerque.
