I wish I were an International Jetsetter like you Marcel, I would then be able to attend what looks likely to be a really good show, however, my best wishes and thoughts will be with you, have a good time and bring back some nice pictures for the unfortunate of us, thanks.

Post by matchboxmarcel »

It took some time to get my pictures posted here as I was very busy last week to get all sorted back into cabinets and into storage again but here are they with my report of this great event. A pitty there were only 75 day-visitors on the day for saturday and not even 50 for the whole weekend. The event was well organized and the atendees had a great time.

Leaving saturdaymorning with a full car. You can see the 1967 Belgium metal header which was once from Belgium collector Jan Naessens. This header shows 3 Models of Yesteryear models. Y4-3 1909 Opel, Y13-2 1911 Daimler and Y3-2 1910 Benz

Arrival at the hotel around 13.00. I needed the full afternoon to set up the exhibtion and unfortuantly could not get around the hotel rooms and the swapmeet !

Image

The 1959 display on the right I got from Argentina at the time and this was already on the 2011 1ST MECA show. Since then John moore got me the 1958 display as pictured on the left. I brought the 1959 display also again this time to show the difference.

Image

1962 display with stipes on the left as shown at 1st MECA in Aachen in 2011 and 1963 display on the right which was a find since then.

Image

1963 display which I got from a Rockerton sale.

Image

1964 generic display on the left which I got via a recent Vectis sale and the 1965 generic displa which was also shown at the 1st MECA in 2011 and was once part of the Belgium Jan Naessen collection.

Image

1965 generic display again on the left and the 1966 generic display on the right which I swapped with another display I had spare last year. (was from Steve Barfeld collection)

1975 counter display and 1976 - 1977 Vacuum formed display for 16 models from Woodgrain period as shown in the 1976 USA + 1977 USA tradecatalogues.

1976-1978 rotating wire rack for 16 models as shown in the 1976 pricelist, 1977 + 1978 UK tradecatalogues and the january 1978 pricelist. This I got from Syria ! many years ago, before the war. Including original Matchbox shipping carton.

Image

1979 rotating wire rack for 16 models from Straw box period. (including original Matchbox shipping carton)

Image

1980 wooden display for 20 models as shown in the 1978 USA tradecatalogue, 1979 USA tradecatalogue and 1980 USA tradecatalogue.

Image

1981 Smiths crisp + bags + a rare trade box for Y12-3 1912 Ford Model T models I got from UK collector Mike Thomas at the time.

Image

Image

Image

This 1981 black plastic displayfor the strawbox period I got as a present from Belgum collector Johan Bruynooghe (a slightly different version 1st version is shown in the 1979 tradecatalogue) This 1981 version is shown in the 1981 tradecatalogue. My display was not in good condition and recently restored by dutch collector Neil Moreton. I have the original Matchbox shipping carton.

Image

1982 father day displayheader 1912 Ford Model T Tanker BP Tanker + all listed variations, including rare 1st version with cast Y12 Base and the model with black filler caps.

Rare display which Dirk Schleuer brought to Aachen. This for N style of boxes from the 1990 period. He got this from the famous ToffToff shop at the time. After the exhbition this display was auctioned off for just under 200 euro. Unfortunatly I do not have the space in my room and the car ! to bring this home.

Image

4 versions of the London to Brighton game, including rare Belgium version with Londres roads (not London) and rules in Dutch and French how to play the game and a rare version with a box with green vacuum insert.

Lesney Double Decker Staff bus original display which I had carred back from the UK a the time. This was saved from a scrappyard. I don't have a driving lisence, went by night coach to London, then by train to the vendor and all the way back with this heavy item. Stored in my room and not on display in my room so Aachen was a rare opportunity to see it.
More rare items on this table were:
A 1912 1912 Ford Deans model made by Matchbox R&D
A rare set with a Y10-3 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost for Jaffa
All 3 Norton Soap packages from aprox 1969
A very rare Dupont salesman set from 1965
A reecent find in India, a biscuit tin with pictures of Models of Yesteryear models from the 60ties.
2 Howard Karslake modes, the 1912 Ford Model T and the 1918 Crossley

Kay Schaber (with grey Matchbox shirt)

I just managed to get back all into the cabinets and storage for a visit from Christian Falkensteiner to me on wendnesday afternoon, april 22rd. who had stayed in the Benelux area to visit carmuseums and collections between the Matchbox Aachen event in the weekend of april 18th and the Dannhausen swapmeet in Aachen, april 25th.

Thank you Marcel, an excellent display of items from your collection, I really wish I either lived near you in your Country, or you lived near me in England, because I would make sure your collection would be seen and appreciated by more collectors, you really have managed to put together a collection worthy of a Museum and a good source of reference.

I know for a fact, my ability to travel to visit your home will not be in the next Ten Years, but after this it will be possible, so I hope you don't sell your collection until I have visited you...

Like Ghosty, I never grow weary of looking at your detailed photo summaries either of your collection or of the various shows you attend in your part of Europe. Thank you Marcel for the time you put into this report. It is enough to make me want to buy a plane ticket and be there in person next time. Sadly, that is not likely to happen.
