I wonder why Matchbox changed the design of base plates when it did not seem to make any difference to assembling the model

It would be interesting to see what changes were made to the inner surface of the baseplate (where's Antonin?). My guess would be that it's a strengthening issue, with a significant number of the original-style baseplate suffering deformation during riveting.
