Here is an example of crimped axle-ends on the 'Yesteryear' Y-3 Riley 'MPH' shown in the 1973 pocket catalogue and this was not the only model in the same catalogue with them, so yes as "tjlglass" says, crimped axles were for quickness.

NOT suggesting anything like that here as R&D would probably have assembled it on a bench
just an observation
very interesting model Numi , nice find
motorman wrote:Numi, i have never seen these casting variations on the Mini ha ha pre pro so thanks for showing and with crimped axles!! That is a very rare little prepro!! Loving it!!!!! :D
nearlymint wrote:Very nice Numi, never seen one with an incomplete date. Nice crimped axles as well, very early base plate. J
Thanks Gentlemen, your comments are appreciated :D ;) and im still reeling from excitement...really!
I just found another casting difference and added the pic to my initial post for your viewing that shows the "Superfast" logo on the Prepro appears a bit more inwards/to the right.

OK Reg...

Y-2 Vauxhall Prince Henry.
Y-4 Opal.
Y-5 Peugeot.
Y-14 Stutz Bearcat.
Y-15 Packard.
Y-16 Mercedes SS.

...are easily seen and maybe the Y-17 Hispano Suiza, as that was a brand new model addition.
