Help me with a list of good Scottish names

Post by matchbox_n_molars »

Over the 34 years of our marriage Lynn and I have had three Scottish Terriers. We lost the last one, "Duncan", about a year and a half ago.
Lynn retires at the end of June and we're contemplating another puppy. I've been assembling a list of good prospective names (probably a male) and it occurred to me that we've got some good Scots right here within the VBD forum. Perhaps you folks can give me some help.
There was a man of Scottish ancestry who lived here in the Cincinnati area and contributed significantly to our American history. He died serving in our American Civil War. His name was Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel. So I'll start my list with any of the three pieces of his name.
1. Ormsby
2. MacKnight, "Mac"
3. Mitchel
4. Clyde- after the river
5. Errol
6. Fergus
7. Lennox
8. Magnus
9. Monroe
10. William
11. Wallace
12. Robert
13. Louis
14. Finnigan (or is this Irish?)

There's a start. Any suggested additions?

Thank you Ghosty! That name rises immediately to the top of the list, both alphabetically and as the new clear favorite!

I've got some Gordon lineage somewhere in my distant family tree. Bruce sounds quite nice for a dog but being in the dental profession, I suppose Phil McCracken or Phil McCavity is out of the question :D

Thank's Greg, our very own "Motorman" will be very pleased, knowing he may be having a puppy named after him... :D

Does that mean he's gone to the dogs
Or is he just a hound dog crying all the time
Maybe he's barking mad

You could always name him after that famous Scotish Snooker player Jock McCue

Mmmmnn let me think!! Alex is a good name but the correct scottish spelling is infact Alick. Given this is a dog that we are helping to name with a Scottish theme I would like to suggest the name "Seumas" pronounced shaymus as the new name for a male puppy, and Isa pronounced eyeza as a name for a female puppy!!!

Good Scottish names for a new Scotty dog!!!
