The finished model shows many chips and scrapes from being used in factory stress testing also, but I still love it dearly. It's single crimped axle was done in 1968, so of course that feature surely is way out of any known Lesney R&D timeline other than the 1970 Wreckers. One day you may also tear that one apart as a 'base off fake' Mick, but maybe someone here might remember me, and even stick up for my honesty and knowledge in collecting Lesneys as Numi has for Bob Brennen.
Even though Motorman still has his doubts, I know Bob has forgotten more than I know about Lesneys after my 50 years of collecting..... :) kwakers
If rivits have NEVER been spun then that makes the casting a good candidate to be a factory special. Nothing wrong with chisel split rivits if they have NEVER been spun.
From the time Lesney had Jack Odell , they had an effective R & D so any model made after he joined once existed in various pre-pro and colour trial forms.
Nice to know kwakers owns a 1968 factory paint trial with a crimped axle from Joe Stone´s collection -which # model is it??? Its no secret Joe Stone was a multiple occasion visitor to Lesney´s factory and that he had chances to know Jack Odell so no surprises that he would have chances to own obsolete pre-pros and colour trials
The Mustang rivit in the ebay auction looks like it has been spun and pried. Now if that rivit was obviously never spun we would not have had anything except paint to point at in the photos.

Heres a pic of a similar White Mustang which i had saved. Not sure about when or where i captured it.
Also seems to have front-end damage/distortion & paint flaws on roof as well.Maybe the experts can compare the paint.

The above picture posted by "Numi" looks like a 'VECTIS' picture, if that helps!

This rivit is properly spun looking like a typical RW 8 for rivit appearance and white paint finish. No signs of any sort that baseplate has ever been off this 2nd car. This 2nd car also has thin 10.5mm diameter wheels as fitted to other believed genuine SF8 trial/sales sample models rather than the specially made for this mass produced model wide 10 x 4mm wheels seen on Bob´s example.Paint appears factory with no touch ups unlike the 1st car which is the chalk to numi´s cheese! Although I can see what looks like casting damage under the paint by the R of FORD on the hood.
The only bug in the ointment is the wheel size - these few believed genuine thin wheeled SF8 pre-pros/colour trials are the sole proven mid 1969 models fitted with 10.5mm diameter wheels rather than the 11.2mm wheels fitted to all other 1969 releases although the SF25 Cortina GT was reported as available in a few US stores at the last moment before christmas 1969 - all other early SF releases apart from the Mustang which pioneered the common 10mm wide wheels and the SF45 which pioneered the larger 11.5mm wide wheels had the same 11.2x2mm solid wheels

You asked for a similar model with very similar casting damage Mick, and I will bet Vectis did not rate this one as a condition 7 model as Bob did the one in his listing. Similar damage? Almost exact in my opinion.
By the way Numi, you are one of our 'Experts', so you can talk to yourself now about oddities. The problem arises when you start answering yourself like kwakers does.
The fact that you saved this Mustang's picture with it's white interior says it all Numi, Thanks for digging it out for others to see........

Chisel split rivits on the roof of SF8 Mustangs to hold the glazing in seem to be common looking at my examples as does damage visible on the outer roof from the operation, but no casting damage around the R (at the opposite point on the body to the base rivit) on any of mine.
