53b Mercedes Benz 200 SE

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) has a variation listed at 53-2B which is noted as "maroon, SGPW (2 wheel variations)". This must be Nick's code 1 since variation 53-2C is maroon with KSGPW (i.e. Nick's code 2). However, there is no clue as to what the two wheel variations referred to actually are, and any suggestions are most welcome. Variation 53-2G is as Nick's code 7 but without the rear silver trim. If confirmed this would be the new code 8.
The AIM “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) and Houghton have no variations not already covered by Nick, and neither does Stannard.
U.K. Matchbox did not cover the model.

The explanation on the two types of silver wheels is quite simple Idris, the 9X24 KSGPW are seen as VERY KNOBBY, versus the 9X20 SGPW which have a less pronounced tread pattern which appear much smoother in appearance, so are just our 2 different SPW tread counts. Bob's Guide did not use tread count at all, Stannard was the first to introduce us to that distinction in his 1985 Guide when he actually supplied both wheel diameters in mm, and also precisely counted treads on all his Lesney variations in his Guide.
We had lived without that information for 2 decades until Mick educated us!

Even though this had been discussed and even pictured by George or possibly Antonin during the LeFora days, the last two dark red Mercedes with fine treads and both base types were also delivered to our stores with a bright red body, totally different than the standard dark red color. You will find that in your second printing of Bob's Guide, (Whoopee) he notes this second 'shade' with only the patent number base as his variation 'H'.
I can add that the earlier base also came in that bright red color, we have had them both since new, and it is NOT just a shade difference. The 2 U.S. store bought models I have are BRIGHT RED, of a much lighter color than the 'stock' dark red commonly found on these. My guess is that these may also be the variations both George and Antonin have without silver rear bumper trim if they compare the colors to the common 'stock dark red models' in their collections.
Translation of our ancient Lesney 'Bibles' Tim and all......LOL 'Shades' of paint in Bob or Harold's U.S. Guides were totally different and very distinct colors in person. Mike Stannard was a bit 'color blind' when publishing his 1985 Guide, he missed a LOT of common paint colors we collected right out of the stores. Nick's Forum and Guide along with our astute collectors have since shown us the spectrum of many colors ignored by casting detailist and hero Mick Stannard in his difinitive and groundbreaking1985 Lesney Guide..... :D kwakers

That doesn't work, Dick. Nick lists 9 x 24 and 9 x 20 SPW. NAMC (second edition) has variation 53-2B noted as "SGPW (2 wheel variations)" and variation 52-2C as KSGPW. The latter must be Nick's 9 x 24 wheel, leaving the conundrum of the SGPW noted as 53-2B for which there are apparently two (unspecified) wheel variations.
Regarding the final issue, you are correct. Bob reported variation 53-2H as being "red, red rear bumper, patent no., BPW (2 shades)". By the sounds of it, there are actually two distinct reds rather than merely two shades and this variation code should therefore have been split.
