Y-5 4.5 Litre Bentley

Post by pkp448 »

This has been detailed by a previous owner. The seats have been painted black, but I can see where they were originally green. The rivets are also in question. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Still looks like an apple/candy green one, but has had a lot of additional painting done. On the metal, this should be fairly easy to remove without damaging the Lesney paint underneath. Easy enough to swap the seat/tonneau component. Not sure about the rivets as the pictures too small for my poor old eyes to see them clearly. The above are my variations of this model. An old picture that I really must re-do. There are different body castings on this model reference the rear panel with or without a cut out.

Thanks for the extra pictures Bill. It is a shame a previous owner has added detail painting to this model, however, it has been done quite well, so it does not detract too much from the overall look of the model.

Yes, the baseplate rivets seemed to have had some attention, but I can not quite see why, because the level of detail painting seen here does not require the model to be taken apart!

Can you remove the seat and rear cover component easily or is it very tight. If it comes away from the model easily, is there a quarter of an inch long 'Cut-Out' at the top of the rear section of the body.

Have a look and come back with your findings, cheers.

The cut out referred to above. This picture lifted from the MOYBOYZ reference section.

Ghosty,

The seat and rear cover are pretty firmly in place.

OK, thanks Bill.

Those rivets were clearly giving somebody some trouble and appear to have been hit with something substantial, but why did they not just use a drill???

Without further detailed pictures (that I am not going to ask for at the moment because it is too late), it still appears to be a genuine 'Apple Green' version.

I will come back later with some more questions and requests for you, take care Bill, see you after the Weekend.

I posted a picture of a 'TELSALDA' plastic copy of the Y-5(A) Bentley 4.5 Ltr model in the 'Matchbox Copies' thread and that model was stored with a few other Bentley models, shown below, Two of which you will know, including the 'TELSADLDA' model, but can anyone identify the Two Bentley models in the middle of the picture below?

Due to some technical problem, I can no longer post text and pictures together on Mick Flack's 'Moyboyz' forum. I have had to post it here and hopefully just link it across to 'Moyboyz'.

Over on 'Moyboyz' we have been running a thread about the Y-5(B) Bentley and I had reason to describe some of the model's casting details, I also mentioned a model in my collection I classed as a 'Pre-Production' model due to it's very early casting details, pre-dating the first early full production models.

Here is my 'Pre-production' Bentley in all over Dark Green.
OFF-SIDE, 22%.JPG
OFF-SIDE, 22%.JPG (50.54 KiB) Viewed 1566 times
The Silver painted grille is factory finish and not hand painted by a previous owner.
NEAR-SIDE, 22%.JPG
NEAR-SIDE, 22%.JPG (51.75 KiB) Viewed 1566 times
This appears to never had any of the decals applied.
REAR, 22%.JPG
REAR, 22%.JPG (47.46 KiB) Viewed 1566 times
Like the grille, the rear filler-cap is factory finish and the tonneau is the early 'Wide' type.
REAR SPRING FILL-IN.JPG
REAR SPRING FILL-IN.JPG (37.85 KiB) Viewed 1566 times
There is NO metal fill-in near the axle housing between the rear springs.

While the early full production models were essentially the same, a rather large metal plate was put in between the springs, presumably for strength or to prevent 'Flashing' in this area on later models, but on the model featured in these pictures, the axle housing itself is smaller than the early models.
NEAR-SIDE FRONT WING STRUTS.JPG
NEAR-SIDE FRONT WING STRUTS.JPG (38.24 KiB) Viewed 1566 times
The front wing struts finish level with each other, but on full production models, they do not, the middle strut is always shorter.
BASE, 22%.JPG
BASE, 22%.JPG (58.56 KiB) Viewed 1566 times
Everything on this model is of Mk1 design.

Additional to those shown above, the front wing struts do NOT become thicker in-section, as they join the front axle housing, something you can see on full production models.

This is why I class this model as a 'Pre-Production' as it pre-dates the known earliest versions of this model, even the first 'Applegreen' models and this is the most glaring detail in as much that it is finished in normal Dark Green, suggesting the model was intended to be released in this colour, not the 'Applegreen' at all!!

This is now the Second example to be found, Bob Tutt (YYS4BOB), has shown one over on 'Moyboyz' and that example has an 'Applegreen' chassis casting!

Hi Kevin,
I have this variation in the green and apple green
My apple green one does not have the cut out under the seat. But the normal green
One does have the cut out.
