A1-a Esso Pumps & Sign.

Post by mike »

I have this Esso Pumps Model
in my collection.

In the Esso flag (sign) is a hole.
I think an error in metal casting.
Maybe an interesting oops?

Today I find in ebay another Esso flag with a hole.
(see picture 3)

Perhaps there are other such oops?

Greetings Mike

I've seen photographs of a fair number of these with holes. Obviously there were metal flow problems with the tooling.

Yes, sadly there are many with the same fault.

I will go as far to say that the majority of these signs are cast with the hole in the sign. There are many out there that have been well cared for that have the hole in them, but the hole is obscured by the decals.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

You don't need the needle, just gently run your finger tip over the sign and if there's a hole you will feel it.

The holes vary in size and shape (like snow flakes no two are the same LOL).

OK. Joe, no needle.
My wife is a doctor.
It makes morning an X-ray picture of the sign. 8-)

In Chapter 11 "Collecting Diecast Toys The First Forty Years" it mentions that there was a casting fault in the metal.

Not sure if all the signs had this fault but in some it is covered by the the decal (not brave enough to investigate with a pin like mike).
Suppose you could try shining a bright light behind to see if there is a hole.
