Y9-2 1912 Simplex issue 21 and rare issue 27 with MACAU base

Bob Tutt had this UK Ebay win with him for me at Sandown, feb 14.
This model (on the left) is issue 21 with the textured yellow roof and not the later more orange yellow roof as pictured on the right.
No sunfading as completly the same color.
It came with the early I1 box with gold innerlay and nbr on endflap outside the line.



The color of the roof is much different to the orange yellow of the models I already had.

The photo in the auction posting was very good so I bought the item. In real live the roof is even somewhat lighter so even more difference with the later orange yellow roofs.

Another rare Simplex is the yellow model with MACAU baseplate, issue 27.
This model 1st came out with a MADE IN ENGLAND base but the very last run had a MADE IN MACAU base.
I once made a bid in a MICA postal auction for 200 gbp which i lost to a higher bidder.
Only a few months later i found one at the Dutch swapmeet in Houten at only 7 euro from an un-aware seller.

Hi Marcel (or anyone else who cares to respond),

I still have a lot to learn about this hobby, thus this question:

In your baseplate photo above, the two outer rivets seem to have a strange "splaying," I would call it... the bright yellow bits that I imagine are part of the painted rivets, but radiating from the outside. I'm not saying this is faked or anything, but I've never seen anything like that on any model. Can you tell me what that is?

Hello Big Al,

In most cases what you are looking at is simply the paint compound around the body of the 'Rivet', being split away as the 'Rivet' is forced down, (squashed in the machine), to the surface of the baseplate to secure it. The body is mounted in such a way for spraying, that the 'Rivets' are nearly always the lowest part of the whole assembly and collect more paint and this paint is quite pliable before its had time to really set hard. As you can see in the picture, it looks like thin Alluminium, painted yellow and used for packing in the holes around the 'Rivet'. A faker could use this method to make this area look more like a new model, if he/she had used a beater, (old playworn model), and the particular example does still have a lot of yellow paint inside the 'Rivet', but the rest of it all looks fine to me and I would be happy to have it in my cabinet, even with those corroded axles!

Being a painting contractor myself, I should have thought about that. Quite educational for me, though, as I never much considered the assembly process of the models. Appreciate your help.

Futher to that this can't be a fake as there was never a later model with a Macau base. Only the last runs of the yellow Simplex like this one had a Macau base.
It was not untill 1996 (almost 10 years after the yellow release) that the casting was used again and a new Simplex apeared in the 40th anniversary Models of Yesteryear range. That model was in red with black base but had a MADE IN CHINA baseplate.

Alan, we ALL still have a lot to learn about this hobby, its just that some of us at the moment, have learnt a little more than others.

Forums such as this clearly show that a lot of 'catching up' is taking place with certain members, while some members appear to be walking encyclopedias.

I started my Rolls-Royce collecting hobby towards the end of the 60's, I started collecting toys and models seriously in the late 70's and find the hobby even more interesting now, even after all those years!

Yes, I have learnt an awful lot in that time, but I don't consider myself any higher up in model car terms, than the next collector, there are many members on this forum, who could show me a thing or two.

How we use or present our knowledge, can lead other collectors into thinking "now there's an expert, I'll ask him again", present information in an authorative way and you'll go a long way.

With whatever knowledge you currently have, I am sure you enjoy the hobby, that's the important part.

Very cool to hear about your background. I'm sure most others here knew it already, but it helps put a face to a name, so to speak.

I am enjoying the heck out of this hobby! I've only been at it for maybe 10 months, but I'm reading as much as I can--between looking for and buying diecasts, of course. Which brings me to your question:

"How are your pictures coming along?"

Well, haha... I haven't taken any yet! But I've saved all of yours and others advice for when I can. Between a few health issues, and the fact that ol' man winter is coming soon here in the northeast U.S. and I've still got exterior painting jobs to finish, I haven't gotten around to experimenting. I'll never forget all the help you all have given, though, and I'll post a couple of shots one of these days.
