Nick only catalogues this model with bumper and headlight trim, so the reason this one caught my attention was obviously the silver radiator grille.
I’ve had a look with it using a magnifying glass and am satisfied that it is genuine (or, more correctly, that the grille, headlight and bumper trim are all contemporary). I also took it with me to the NEC yesterday where it was scrutinised by Ghosthunter, Motorman and Fixer under admittedly non-ideal conditions. The consensus was the radiator trim certainly looked genuine. Working on that premise, my guess is that it is either the result of one of the ladies making a genuine mistake, having previously been trimming a model with bumper headlight and grille trim, or it is an example of a little bit of creativity and deviation from the instructions by the lady concerned in order to relieve the monotony of trimming countless numbers of these models. Either way, it means that models such as this will be few and far between.
So, does anyone else have a 62a with full trim to the front? If so, is it crimped or riveted axles? (This one has riveted.)
To close, before a certain member wheels out and dusts off the same old tired argument, I would like to point out that, unlike the model on Nick’s catalogue page, there is no sign of anything else which might be considered super-detailing. Furthermore, the silver trim was not used as a selling point and the model did not command a premium , all of which makes me more confident that the trim is a genuine factory product rather than yet another example of enhancement from a model railway enthusiast’s brush.
