Wwwwoah!
Those colors of the 1st one really reflects Lesney's 1-75 and Super Kings changing color palette for around '71 or '72.
But for them to be on a Yesteryear is odd to say the least. Odd but fascinating at the same time.

Thanks for showing. What a treat Bob, however shocking! :D
Pre-production I would assume.

The yellow looks brighter than the Miura's lemon color. Is it like the yellow Eccles Camper?
And is the pink the same as the Honda Motorcycle from '72 or so?

Yes. Incomplete copyright date, and no Y No. on bumpers. Regarding the colours, I know nothing about the little cars, I leave that answer to someone else!

Thanks for adding this cracking model Bob, my one is quite chipped and faded but I love it. I have the same colour combo on a prepro MB25 mod tractor that was saved from the bin.

My god, there's more than one?! :-)

So this incomplete date code thing - is it a YY deal only or were they found on pre-pro 1-75s or Kings at all?

On my one the pink is faded as well but not so bad. I still like my peacock blue and gold version and took me a long time to get another after selling the first one I had years ago

I think the most stunning Lagonda I have seen was in the late John Clark's collection - purple chassis with dark bottle green body although the pink and purple is very nice as well and not sure who got those 2 models when they were sold off. (See front row in photo)

If anyone here is interested I have the Y16 Mercedes in Lesney green body with orange chassis (early prepro, slight chips to sides of fenders) and willing to exchange for something equally prepro MOY.

The silver model was one of a set made for a rich Dutch ( I think) collector. They must have pulled the models apart to take an original casting from them and the whole set is in pure silver. I have pics of some of the other models made if you want them.

On MOYs it was usually the incomplete date (ie 197- ) or an incomplete Y number (ie Y- ). I have seen this on other models through out the whole ranges but seems it depended on the model where it may have just been a different casting to the normal release model. I think it all depended at what stage the model was when this was done, if a model was already well into production and it was decided to be released as number x whatever then no need for an incomplete date or number.

I still don't have a blue /gold one :( . The silver plate/black one in Mick's picture is the one I now have. I wanted the one next to it with the orange body/gold plated chassis, but don't know where that went. A lot of this collection went on E-Bay, but a lot more was sold in private sales. Where is it all now? There were hundreds of prepros and colour/plastic trials in this collection. There is a plated example with silver body and gold chassis in existence as well as those shown here.

Regarding the solid silver set, some of the castings were modified. Note there is no spare wheel cover or tool box on the silver one. Lagondas only carried one spare wheel, (I can't remeber which side it was on) the other side was a tool box.

Window Into the Minds of '70s Lesney Workers Rant

Post by Lummox »

Whew! I can't get over the colors Lesney was considering!
The pink & yellow one wins hands down for shock value, and those colors at least technically go together.
And lime gold with peacock blue gets high marks for shock value too, but seem to clash a bit. Still lovable for that reason.
At the risk of offending anyone...which I DO NOT wish to do, bottle green with maroon is just pure clash all the way for me, but equally fun to see!
This is just purely my tastes (which don't mean jack), but the one I posted at the top is my unbiased favorite so far.

I can sure see why you guys love the differently colored pre-pros though - so fun to collect and look at, and I am thankful to see all the pix!

It was an interesting time period historically speaking in general. Tastes were changing along with politics - evolving and devolving all at the same time.
The advent of pop culture was taking a strong hold by then.
In '73 my parents painted our 1800's house dark olive green, and the interior in my '71 Imperial (in my avatar) looks like a 3rd word casino.
Strange and great stuff!
Rant over.
