Y10-1 1908 Grand Prix Mercedes

Post by johnboy »

Any advice on this one would be great. It has what looks like white paint and later seats but the rear retainer is the thinner version. Is this a valid combination? There's also the light blue seats, would these be a custom or something else? I haven't cleaned the model so it's quite dirty, but the white paint, crimps and spread rivets all seem ok. Thanks.

Hi John,
Nice model, I think its probably sun fade on the seats. I am sure I have one somewhere, I do like these old yesteryears.
All the best

Hi John, its amazing what a bit of sunlight can do. I tend to keep all my ones like that just for comparison and also looks good on display.
If I am right you bought these 2 and I bought the Bentley which was an unbelievable sun fade , but looks good against another model.

That's right Jason, nice looking Bentley :D What do you think of the paint colour and do you know if the later seats and the thin retainer fit together?

The model is strange - the thin retainer goes up to issue 10 in the book but also has the type 2 seat panel which goes from issue 5. However there are no white shades listed on these - Issue 2 & 3 have thin retainer but 1st type side seat panel and likewise iss. 12 has the larger side panel but thick retainer. So this one is not listed if truly white.
The seats are well and truly sun bleached ( most greens of this era go like it after long exposure - Bentley , Allchin etc. and if seats have faded this much has the sun also bleached the cream shade out. Hard to say on this one as it looks white underneath and has the 4 lugs on the exhaust pipes which finish aroun issue 5 as well.

Thanks Mick. It's the same whitish colour right down to the spread rivets, but given the sunfade on the seats, it must be questionable. Still looks good on the shelf though.

The trim, the wheels, the decals and the arches all look in great condition. Wonder what it would look like with red seats, perhaps Ghosty or zb could superimpose some onto the photo
