Hello McCarthyMR, a very nice Gift Set you have there and if what looks like the original clear plastic poly covering is intact, leave it like it is, but check it is not strangling the inner cardboard box. This clear plastic covering was designed to keep the models in their plastic inner tray but intended to be removed so you can get to the models, however, over time this plastic covering tends to shrink, causing distortion to the more valuable cardboard casing.

If this has started to happen with yours, I would be tempted to put some pin-prick holes in an area not easily seen, just to help relieve the tension in the plastic, but stll maintain the original look of the set.

Good advice. Appreciate it. It does still have the original cellophane around it and it looks like it's not causing tension at the moment. I'll definitely take your advice though and prick it in some unseen areas.

Have a look at where the Cellophane has been heat joined, There will be a rough looking join and this is a good place to put your tiny holes, as close to one of those rough edged joins.

Yours was superceded by the sets with various "Woodgrain" models in. I have the combinations below, but suspect at least two other permutations exist.



Note that this packaging is from 1970, yet the models are post 1973. The story goes that a load of unused gift set packaging was found in a warehouse, and rather than destroy it all, it was filled with the later models. All my sets are sealed, and some have the original cardboard packing sleeve.

Just to avoid confusion, does that mean mine is a 1970 edition or a later post 1973 edition?

...it is a pre-73 edition, because all the models have the original metal wheels with skinny hard plastic tyres.

Sorry to confuse As Kevin says, metal wheels indicate pre '73 models, plastic wheels with the bulky plastic tyres indicate post '73 models although crossovers do exist.


This Y6 Cadillac has pre '73 colour scheme, but post '73 castings and wheels.
