Here's a talking point for all. An advert from the 1960/1 Eagle Annual. I found this exert in an Eagle Annual compilation 'best of the 1960's.
I actually have a number of the annuals from the 1950's so I might take a look when I next dig them out.

Every week I got the Eagle - good old Dan, Digby and Hubert and the Mekon - great stuff. Also great exploded pics of vehicles and other stuff like planes etc. - a real boys comic

The adds of that era are very interesting. They certainly are not only directed towards boys but also train collectors. I think the guy who wrote the copy was an avid train collector.
From memory I think his name was Peter Webb. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

You are right Steve.
I have bought many old copies of the Railway Modeller as well from these years and many have Matchbox adds in them.
Those with Models of Yesteryear models were scanned and are pictured in Alex Picha his book about Models of Yesteryear 1956-1972.

Good stuff! Thank you for some blasts from the past.
Don't we all wish that we had bought a few of those Matchbox painting/coloring books -- painted/colored in or not!!
Bill

I think you're right Steve - there is a bit about Peter and these ads in the 40 years book.matchboxkiwi wrote:The adds of that era are very interesting. They certainly are not only directed towards boys but also train collectors. I think the guy who wrote the copy was an avid train collector.

The ads themselves are very nice - I like the look of this sort of period advertising.
Cheers,
Gavin
