Lesney MOY - Y-5a 1929 Le Man's Bentley

Post by McCarthyMR »

Hi all,

I've had this since I was a kid. I've started to go through some of my old toys and found that my MOY 1929 bentley might not be standard..

Basically, as you'll see in the pics below, it is clearly a Le Man's Bentley but is labelled underneath as a 4 1/2 litre Bentley (Y-5b)

Is this normal or is this an oddity?

Hello McCarthyMR, your little Y-5(A) Bentley is fairly standard (apart from the grille surround). It was the Worlds first commercially available model of the 4.5 Litre car and introduced by Lesney during 1956. The model is based on a 4.5 Litre car, effectionately known as a 'Blower' Bentley simply because of the Amhurst Villiers Supercharger installed at the front, just ahead of the grille.

The 'Le Mans' tag name comes from the fact that 'Blower' Bentley cars did race in the famous 'Le Mans' racing event, but without any wins, 3 Litre and 6.5 Litre cars were far more successful in the same event.

Your particular example does not have it's original tyres, but is unusual in not having a silver or gold painted grille surround and while I can see it is very 'Play Worn' it is still presentable and displayable.

There is no real monetary value with these models as there are so many in existance and if this were at a toy fair, in this condition, I would expect to pay no more than £2 or £3.

Thank's for showing it here,

GHOSTHUNTER.

Try finding a mint example with green radiator surround. Never found one yet. There's not many of this particular variation about.

The tyres look too big, and the correct ones would have "LESNEY" on the side walls.

Have to agree Bob - very hard to find an all green Y5-1 and same as you still don't have one. Funny thing is in the book they are not even listed as scarce, just a plain common model. Sadly I couldn't look at this one even if rare, in my display as to tatty !!! :D

Thanks guys,

Apologies for the tattiness. It's been that way as long as I can remember. It's older than I am after all. :)
