Question on a 11b

This I find interesting, a small Esso decal under the larger one. I suppose the smaller one just didn't look right.
Has anyone else seen this? Or does anyone have an 11b with the smaller decal?

Yours has to be a very early first run 11B that was fitted with that left-over 11A second size decal initially. The 11B tank is so much larger of an oval when viewed from the rear, it must have been a quick decision to enlarge the ESSO logo. I have never seen or heard of one like yours Jeff, it is a dandy! The outline is very distinct, are the letters on the smaller decal visible through the top one? kwakers

A very nice find. Don't worry Dick, it took me a while to make out anything on the decal underneath, but the wording does just show through. Look for the bubbly texture where the letters are.

Just as John said, you can see the letters. Here's another picture at a different angle.
I believe it is a code 3. I have had this model for some time but never noticed the hidden decal.

This is really interesting, and well done for spotting it!
My guess would be that someone got issued with one or more sheets of the old (i.e. smaller) decals by mistake and duly applied them to tankers. The error was spotted before boxing up, and quickly rectified by applying the bigger decal over the top of each and every one of them - in which case there should be other examples around (but probably not very many).

I will hide behind the excuse of a poor computer monitor rather than admit to not seeing those shadows clear enough on your initial post Jeff. They looked a bit like shadow lettering last night when I was tired, exhausted, teary eyed, not enough light in the cave, a pebble in my eye, blat blat blat....damn you Jazz, no respect for an old man who has to look over his glasses....LOL kwakers
