Moko Lesney and other Tractors and Bulldozers

Post by Wolfie Ginsburg »

Moko were independent distributors who were used by Lesney and other manufacturers to distribute their toys

Among the toys they sold were the Early Lesney Catterpillar Tractor and Bulldozer

The Lesney Tractor which was manufactured in a number of colours.

and the Bulldozer, also made in various colours

This one has lost its treads can anyone advise where I can get replacement black treads? I need a few sets-

Production of the Early Lesney tractor and bulldozer was stopped in 1950

These models were never issued in individual boxes. they were sold in boxes of 12. (A pretty poor marketing decision in times of austerity, but that is my opinion)

A modified version of the bulldozer was included in the Prime Mover set a few years later

Moko also sold what they called a Heavy Tractor. I don't know who manufactured them. Does anyone know?

and a bulldozer

Both were also made in a number of colours

The Mokos are much smaller than the Lesneys

The Mokos were issued in individual boxes

The artwork is quite cute

The Mokos wee much more widely and successfully distributed and that is why many more can be found now

Hi Wolfie,
Gary has written to me regarding his auction for the Moko crawler, He used Matchbox in the title for search purposes only, nowhere in the description does he mention it is a Matchbox toy, No deceit was intended, Gary is one of the good guys, I regard him as a good friend and have done for many years.
Having been an ebay seller for many years I know what a difference having the name 'Matchbox' in the title can do to help your sales, especially when the item is not strictly a Matchbox toy.
the Morestone 'Supercar' that I recently sold comes to mind

A little like saying..."I must hoover up this morning"...when actually you will be doing the vacumning...hoover being the brand name...'Hoover'.
...and someone tells you, "I've got a box of Dinkies up in the loft", but when you finally see them, not a Dinky in sight!

I wonder if we can find another vehicle that uses the same driver as this, it may tell us who made the Moko crawler,
I'm sure I have seen a similar driver in a ruston bucyrus somewhere

I apologise to Gary
I didn't mean to offend or embarrass him

I just wanted to teach readers who don't know about relationship between Moko and Lesney
I don't want readers to think that Moko automatically means Lesney or Matchbox

The tractors are good examples to use to do this

As it is, I do collect Mokos when I come across them, but I know and understand the link

There are repro drivers Nick so possible it may have been a repro stuck in the Ruston but I to recall the same driver in a model - maybe the digger excavator shown on the first MB stand reproduced by MICA (the small green one) but again may have been a repro part.
Many colours used on the crawler and dozer
Orange
Light Yellow
Dark yellow
Light Green
Dark Green - all above crawler & dozer (still looking for either green crawler !)

Metallic Blue -Dozer only - Very Rare
Red / Yellow - Dozer only
Red - Crawler only - Very rare

No problem Wolfie, I'm sure Gary is quietly thanking you for getting his auctions a bit of extra publicity.
