I live with a '66 Alfa GTV, so the pitfalls of touchy mechanical bits is not new.

Nah, actually the Alfa, once sorted out, has been hugely reliable. The wife and I drove it twice on 2k road trips to California. We had one problem, which had nothing to do with Alfa Romeo engineering.
