Kemlow Sentry Box Series

The Sentry Box packaging

The 3 ton Bedford Lorry
The S type Bedford is probably the easiest of the series to find, It was painted matt or gloss green and sometimes it was enhanced with silver trim, It had a red and blue decal to the front and rear and the tailboard was a seperate casting which is often missing, The wheels were grey metal and the axles could have a Lesney like rounded nail head type end while the other end was crimped or the axles could be a plain metal rod with both ends rounded off which unbelievably - was actually done by hand!.

3 ton Bedford Lorry & 25 Pdr Field Gun
The Bedford was re-released with an accompanying 25 pounder Field Gun which was cast in two seperate parts consisting of the gun barrel and the trailer so that the gun barrel was free to be raised & lowered, My example has it's two die cast wheels mounted on plain metal bar axles with both ends rounded by hand but the Lesney type round head nail with crimped end was probably used as well.

Centurion Tank
The Centurion tank was a three piece casting which consisted of the turret & gun barrel, the tank body and the baseplate. The turret was loosely riveted to the body so it was free to be revolved, There were no tracks so it had 4 metal wheels fitted inside the base, As the axle ends were enclosed it was not neccessary to round them off to hold the wheels on, There was no silver trim on this one but the model was enhanced with blue and yellow (regimental?) decals. The brown paint on the pictured model is not original but it is rumoured that some did have brown paint applied to give a them camouflage effect.

Armoured Vehicle
The "Armoured Vehicle" was undoubtedly based on the Saracen, It had a seperately cast turret that could be revolved, The body was a one piece casting that had no baseplate, The axles on my example have two hand rounded ends but I'm sure round head axles with crimped ends were used as well, The wheels were grey metal and although it usually had no silver trim it did have regimental marking decals front and rear which was a red ball and yellow crescent design.
Robert Newson has an example of the Saracen with a Limber and Field Gun but with all due respect to Robert I cant help wondering if it might be a copy by an unknown manufacturer as the parts are all modified from the regular Sentry Box series and the individual pieces appear to be mismatched even though they were obviously made as a set, It also has a mixture of different types of wheels fitted.

Thornycroft Mighty Antar Tank Transporter
The Antar and (Sankey) trailer were larger than the rest of the range so were sold in an enlarged box, My Antar has silver trim to the headlights and fuel tanks but the amount of trim applied can vary somewhat, The trailer has no trim but does have a single blue and yellow regimental decal on one of the trailer ramps, The grey metal wheels were mounted on dome headed axles with crimped ends and the ramps and spare wheel were also held on with these type axle pins, The axle pin for the spare wheel also acted as a pivot point and held the tractor and trailer together.
