Lesney Conestoga covered wagon |
|
In 1955 Lesneys last of the early toys was introduced, It was a model of a western style Conestoga wagon which was approximately the same size as the small coronation coach at 125mm (4.9 inches) long, The wagon did not fit in with any other model made by Lesney and I wonder if it was made with the expectation that it would be as successful in the USA as the small coronation coach was in the UK. The coach itself had a green metal body and wheels with an authentic looking white canvas type roof canopy and a brown painted driver with a red scarf, It was drawn by six brown painted horses with white faces and tails which were cast individually and mounted to the drawbar before painting, The left front horse had a rider with a yellow jacket and hat and a red scarf and early issues also had gold trim to the horses. The early issues had two red painted water barrels fitted to the sides which can sometimes be found painted brown, Later the barrels were omitted and the holes in the sides of the wagon were filled in. The wagon was packaged in a full colour box which made no mention of Moko, It illustrated the model on the front and the box was numbered #59 and in the USA it sold for 59c, For the collector the conestoga wagon is not one of the most desirable early toys although mint and boxed examples still fetch good prices. The model was not a great seller so it was deleted in 1957. |
