The Soap box racer was also introduced in 1949, It was a model of a cart that was made by young boys that used the axles from a pram and a few pieces of timber to make a cart, The model was painted bronze with a brown painted rider with flesh coloured face, hands and knees and blue painted socks and scarf, The wheels were unpainted die cast metal which were small on the front axle which could be turned to steer and larger wheels on the rear axle and an elastic band was used as the steering rope. The Soap box had "Soap" on one side and "Soda" on the other side. The first run of the racer had a smooth underneath but soon the words " A Lesney Product" and "Made in England" were cast in. Sadly the racer was a flop so very few were made so this one is the rarest of all the early toys which is eagerly sought by collectors, As far as we know it was not packaged in its own box so would have been packed in boxes of twelve pieces. It is not known how long the model was in production for but it was not for very long, The figure of only 1400 soap box racers were made has been mentioned in the 40 year book and there are probably less than 20 of them known to exist today. |
