Lesney small Coronation coach |
|
The success of the larger Coronation coach prompted Lesney to produce a smaller version which measured 118mm (4.5 inches) long which was released in 1953, It had a silver plated coach body and wheels which were attached by crimped flat head pins and sometimes the coach can appear to be gold plated but this is due to tarnishing of the silver plate. There was just one casting modification where "England" was cast into the rear of the coach. Unlike the large scale horses which were lead the small coach had die cast horses which were cast to the drawbar complete with their four riders, The horses were painted off white with red blankets and gold saddles, The riders had black hat and boots and red tunics. The drawbar had " A Moko toy by Lesney made in England" cast into the top. The coach was packaged in a multicoloured box with "Coronation coach" and "A perfect miniature" to the sides, The endflaps were marked "A Moko model made by Lesney" because Moko were given sole distribution rights on this model, It was a wonderful success and a million were sold and the profits from it were used to launch the Matchbox 1-75 series of miniature vehicles. Benbros also made a small coronation coach which is very similar to the Lesney version but the Benbros coach is easily identifiable because it had EIIR cast into the coach doors. |
