Lesney Matchbox Accessory pack 2a car transporter |
|
The Lesney Accessory pack number two was the Bedford S type car transporter which was introduced in 1957. The car transported was made to a larger size than the 1-75 series vehicles so it could carry four models from the miniatures range. The tractor unit was a one piece casting and the trailer was cast in two pieces where the lower deck was a seperate casting from the sides and upper deck. Oddly there was no ramp to allow vehicles to be driven up to the top deck and the top deck could not be folded down to be loaded. The model was painted blue all over and it had '"Matchbox" Car Transporter' stamped to the sides in black ink and grey metal wheels on crimped axles, Later a red decal replaced the stamped inscription which read 'Car collection Ltd car transporter' and the wheels were changed for grey plastic on crimped or rounded axles, Later black plastic wheels replaced the grey wheels and transporters with grey wheels on the tractor unit and black wheels on the trailer are a known factory error. Late in the models life it was recoloured when the tractor unit and lower deck on the trailer were painted red and the sides and top deck of the trailer were painted grey, The blue versions are quite common but the red & grey version is rare. It was packaged in either a 'B' type box or the later red & grey issues were packaged in a 'D' type box, The model was deleted in 1962-63 |
