Matchbox Superfast MB68-c Porsche 910

The Porsche 910 (aka Carrera 10) was a 1966 design of which 15 were built for the 1967 and 1968 World Sportscar Championship which included events such as Le Mans. It joined the SuperFast series as a new casting in 1970 painted in red clearcoat over gold primer and fitted with orange tinted glazing , ivory seats and thin 11x2mm 5 slot wheels with a race 68 sticker on the front in the authentic position.
During its 5 year stay in the range it was a packaged in “G“ or `I“ or G3 boxes as well as all blisterpacks with copyright dates between 1969 and 1974 as well as the “Broomstick“ blisters (and likely the earlier US only “Zingomatic“ blisters too although photo confirmation is required).
After the first run, wide wheels in the 11x4mm 5 slot design were used for all future issues of this casting.

The amount of amber tint in the glazing unit can vary considerably, although cars with untinted windows are very rare indeed. All baseplates were plated unpainted metal. Extra stickers were supplied for the G3 giftset issues and during the course of normal production shortages of the race 68 labels resulted in some cars having race 45 or race 137 labels as well as surplus Scorpion labels once this range was cancelled. No significant premiums should be paid for label variations because huge quantities of unused labels were sold to collectors and dealers on factory closures.

The Scorpions range included a plastic Porsche 910 bodyshell made from the #68 master mould which is clearly very closely related to the #68 diecast 910.
A special and substantial run was made by early 1972 and in the shops that spring and summer in more authentic race white without labels for exclusive inclusion in the “Broomstick“ blisterpacks.
Lesney shipped Porsche 910 components to Roly Toys in Brazil in the early 1970s to allow them to paint and assemble this casting in its standard form although amongst the different colours they used were two very attractive shades of metallic blue adorned with the usual race 68 stickers.
