Matchbox Superfast MB22-c Pontiac GP Sports Coupe
|
|
The #22 Pontiac GP joined the SuperFast range in 1970 but was deleted within a year. It was always packaged in ´G´ boxes or USA or Canada blisterpacks with copyright dates 1969 or 1970.
The Pontiac was recoloured to stunning purple clearcoat over silver primer which can be found in 3 distinct shades. A handful of pre-productions are known to survive fitted with standard red regular wheels bodies with opening doors and purplish wine coloured bodies (same standard colour as used on #19 Lotus F1) fitted with opening doors.
All known red painted #22c SuperFast bodies with cast shut doors were in fact painted & assembled in Brazil in 1971 by Roly toys from components supplied by Lesney in the UK (other colours may have been produced in Brazil).
All of these cars were usually fitted with thin 11x2mm solid or hollow 5 slot wheels although what appear to be the last issues in the lightest and darkest shades do commonly feature hollow thin 10.5x2mm 5 slot wheels.
Lesney dropped masked silver trim spraying with the regular wheels, although collectors have in many cases brushed on their own silver trim , so no premium should ever be paid for this, most probably, non-existant variation.

Above: The beautiful and very desirable red superfast wheeled Pontiac which is probably the most sought after model in the range, Sadly only a handful were made. What with the slot mags and the raised suspension the Pontiac was really brought to life.

|
Above: Another one that is likely to be a permanent gap in our collections is this extremely rare pre production / colour trial model with superfast type baseplate and wheels fitted to a regular wheel body with opening doors which has been painted in the shade of purple that is normally fourd on the #19 Lotus.

Above: Probably the nicest version is in dark purple, This one has 11x2mm wheels.

|
Above: The mid purple, also with 11x2mm wheels, As the Pontiac was not in production for very long all were packaged in G type boxes.

Above: The light purple Pontiac, This one is fitted with the slightly smaller 10.5x2mm wheels.

|
Above: Showing the dark purple and the mid purple Pontiacs, There's really not much difference between shades.

Above: A rare pre production / colour trial Pontiac with yellow body, cast closed doors and no hot foil chrome plating to the wheel centers.
